Andrea Tomicich

Italian fine art photographer. Lives and works in Trieste, where he was born in 1968.

Background

Self-taught. He grew up observing the work of a family friend, a professional photographer, who passed on to him a passion for image-making and introduced him to basic techniques. It was an informal but deep apprenticeship, built on time in the studio, exchange, and shared vision. Over the years, other photographers he met along the way enriched his perspective through collaborations, dialogue, and joint projects.

He served for several years as president of a photography association in Trieste, an experience that helped him grow not only technically but also in the collective management of photography as a cultural and artistic practice.

Infrared as a vision

Since 2005, he has devoted himself primarily to infrared photography. Not as a special effect, but as a poetic inquiry: to see beyond the visible, to reveal a dimension that the eyes cannot perceive.

He uses full-spectrum converted cameras and a range of filters (from 520nm to 1100nm, including the classic 720nm, 850nm, and 950nm), adjusting the effect according to the context. In his images, nature and human presence coexist in an ethereal balance, removed from ordinary time.

Main projects

  • What your eyes see not (2022) – solo exhibition at Galleria Tivarnella, Trieste. An exploration of the invisible as an aesthetic experience.
  • Alchimia d’abisso (2024) – abstract color photography (non-infrared), presented as a solo exhibition in Trieste. A project exploring the image as liquid and mysterious matter.
  • Lacrime del legno (2025) – group exhibition at Sala Xenia, Trieste. An inquiry into what remains after the passage of humanity.
  • Il peso del non detto (2026) – solo exhibition at Galleria Tivarnella, Trieste. An exploration of the weight of what has been left unsaid and that burdens each of us.

Gallery representation

He is represented by Tivarnella Art Consult and Wondarteum gallery, where part of his work is catalogued.

National and international exhibitions

He has exhibited in group shows in New York (Tribeca, 2023, 2024, 2025), in Venice at 1758 Venice Art Studio (May 2024), and with solo exhibitions in Trieste (Municipal Exhibition Hall, 2023; Galleria Tivarnella, 2022).

He has won numerous photography competitions in Trieste, including first prizes and top-three placements. His images have been published in books and catalogues. He has been interviewed and featured on the television program “Arte Visione” (Tele Capodistria, Slovenia – broadcast in Italian).

Collections

Some of his photographs are part of private collections in Italy and abroad.

“There is no single vision. There are things we cannot see, but which exist. I seek the ethereal, the invisible to the eye. And in each shot, I seek what connects me to the other: empathy, exploration, wonder.”
